Coming Soon: Song Of The Day!

Starting tomorrow, get ready for a Song Of The Day every weekday (and maybe every day).  This could be a song you probably haven't heard yet, or it could be a song you've probably already heard but need to look at a different way.  These will mostly be Top 40 songs though, obviously.

Also, look for another in-depth feature in the near future- this time, I'll be deciding the most ubiquitous song from each of the last ten years.  Ubiquitous doesn't necessarily mean good or bad, just inescapable and exceptionally popular.  You probably think you remember all the big hits, but be prepared for some surprises.

In the meantime, here's another attraction that's sure to leave you coming.  Har har.

This is Natasha Bedingfield, and I apologize for my usage of crude humor.

Six Country Songs You Should Probably Know

So if you follow contemporary country music at all, you probably know all these songs well already.  But if you're like me and have a lot of breadth but not much depth in your library, these are the best country hits out there right now.  I'm not too much of a country fan, but songs like these are the exception.  We'll save for another time the in-depth discussion about the industry behemoth that country music has become, but it certainly will be worth discussing at some point.  In the meantime:
Eli Young Band- "Crazy Girl:"

Brad Paisley feat. Carrie Underwood- "Remind Me:"

Lady Antebellum- "Just A Kiss:"

The Band Perry- "If I Die Young:"

Jason Aldean feat. Kelly Clarkson- "Dont You Wanna Stay:"

Blake Shelton- "Honey Bee:"

Pop Music "Fantasy Draft," Part 2- The Guys!

So, although I'm a couple minutes after my self-imposed deadline, here is Part 2 of our epic Pop Music "Fantasy Draft," almost on time.  This time we focus on the fellas.  Again, if you missed the basic premise, here it is one more time:

You are a record exec and you have to sign two artists this year- one male solo artist and one female solo artist.  Any and all acts are potential “free agents” who could be signed.  Who do you pick and why?  Rank your top ten choices for each gender from 10-1.

Feel free to comment tell me how awesome I am (disagreements not accepted).  Here's the list:

10. T-Pain

This is not the most well-informed or well-researched choice, I admit.  But the sheer number of songs that T-Pain appears on, whether or not they reach the Top 10 (which, by the way, there have been 14 of) indicates to me that T-Pain can be a good investment, if due only to his tireless work ethic.  The more appearances he makes, the higher the likelihood of a hit, which means T-Pain is a pretty safe bet.  Also he pioneered the use of Auto-Tune so I have to give props where they’re due.

9. Bruno Mars

A classic up-and-comer with one solo album, a few hit singles, and already an impressive number of featured appearances, Bruno Mars seems loaded with potential.  He was also “loaded” with a charge of cocaine possession, but that’s another story for another time.  Point is, this is a choice with a lot of upside, and Mars still has almost his whole career in front of him (which maximizes the amount of money he could make you) but because we have such a small sample size of material to work with thus far, we can’t say with lots of confidence that he’ll continue to be this successful.  But his potential is strong enough to warrant a number 9 ranking.

8. Chris Brown

Two years ago, Chris Brown would have been in the Top 5 of this list.  Six months ago, he would have been off the list.  But despite his rather serious personal issues, he has managed to resurrect his music career, and has returned to the land of marketability.  Brown possesses such talent and crossover appeal that he should be able to make people completely forget his troubles and continue buying his music, and concert tickets.  As long as he can avoid another meltdown, his product is certainly good enough to make his record label boatloads of money.

7. Usher

Usher is pretty similar to Chris Brown, but different in a few key ways.  First, he’s ten years older than Brown.  Not good.  Second, he’s much more emotionally stable.  Very good.  Third, he’s had a consistently successful career with few bumps in the road.  Also good.  So, although he has less time left in his “prime,” he goes one spot higher than Breezy because the rest of his career seems like more of a sure bet than Chris Brown.

6. Drake

Drake can do it all- sing, rap, dance…well, maybe not dance so much.  But still, he can sing and rap and write his own rhymes, and he can headline a song or just do a guest spot, and he makes it all work.  It’s not really fair to call Drake an up-and-comer at this point because he’s already so established, but he still isn’t quite as much an entrenched sure thing at this point as the guys in front of him.  I’m still not certain that Drake can be his own self-sufficient act at this point; I think he needs help from too many other artists all the time to offset his sound.  Nonetheless, he has an extremely bright present and future, so I have him as my sixth choice here.

5. Jay-Z

An artist like Jay-Z really tests the limits of my premise.  If we look at him purely as a rapper, the signs look bleak- he’s 41 and he already “quit the game” once before returning.  It’s hard to see him signing off on a five-album deal that brings in tens of millions for a record label.  However, if we expand the premise to look at the industry-mogul side of Jay-Z, then we have to take him very seriously.  I draw the line somewhere down the middle.  I say we would stand to profit from some of Jay-Z’s nonmusical endeavors, like clothing lines or other brands, but not from his positions as head of Roc-a-Fella or Def Jam or the New Jersey Nets.  Based on these guidelines, he comes in at number 5, but in actuality he could be pretty much anywhere on the list depending on what you choose to include for him.

4. Eminem
What an awesome old-school picture!

This one’s a more straightforward option.  Eminem sells truckloads of albums.  He always has.  If he wasn’t so old, he would probably be number one.  But just like Jay-Z, his motivation to keep rapping has wavered at times, and he certainly finds himself on the brink of being past his prime or just tired of it all.  But after the runaway success of his last album, Recovery, and his current venture Bad Meets Evil, with Royce da 5’9, I have to figure he’s got one or two monster albums/tours left in him that will leave my imaginary label flush with cash to go find the next Great White Hope.

3. Kanye West

Some people may be tempted to put Kanye West at number one, but those people are confusing musicianship and artistic integrity with sales appeal.  Sure, Kanye is a gifted rapper and he sells a ton of records, but he doesn’t sell as many as the people above him, nor does he have the total package of album sales, singles sales, concert sales, and other merchandise and ventures to be the top choice.

2. Lil Wayne

Yes, Weezy was in jail for a good while.  But rewind just a little further than that.  His last album, Tha Carter III, was the top-selling album of 2008, selling over 3 million copies.  Since then, he released an ill-fated rock album and an EP, both of which have sold remarkably well for what they are, and headlined a couple sold-out tours.  After this government-induced hiatus, Wayne is coming back with Tha Carter IV, and if it’s as good as the last Carter (which I think it will be) it should outsell it.  Lil Wayne has everything going for him at this point; he’s very versatile and can sell just about anything, and he’s only 28.  The only reason he comes in second here is because of a certain invincible force in front of him…

1. Justin Bieber

Look, it’s not like I’m a Justin Bieber fan.  And to be honest, I have my doubts about how well his act will carry over as he gets older and moves out of his adorable-shaggy-haired-teenager phase.  But what I do know is that if I am a record executive and I have the option of signing any male solo artists and I pass up signing Bieber, I would look pretty damn stupid.  His appeal with teenage girls and children, the most fanatic of all demographics, is unparalleled.  He’s made so much money already, and he’s so young still, that I have to figure he’ll make me more in the future than anyone else on this list.  In real life, I hope I’m wrong, because I can’t stand the guy.  But for the purposes of this exercise, taking Justin Bieber as my male solo artist is an absolute must.

It's Too Hot!

It is simply too hot for writing in-depth music analyses today, so Part 2 of our Pop Music Fantasy Draft will be posted tomorrow.  In the meantime, here's a "hot" picture of an honorable mention from Part 1- Shakira!

Pop Music "Fantasy Draft," Part 1- The Ladies!

Yesterday I promised you an epic new post would be coming soon.  Well, here it is.  Here's a quick reminder of the premise:
You are a record exec and you have to sign two artists this year- one male solo artist and one female solo artist.  Any and all acts are potential “free agents” who could be signed.  Who do you pick and why?  Rank your top ten choices for each gender from 10-1.

Today I present part one- the ladies.  Check back tomorrow for the guys' list, and feel free to comment and disagree with me vehemently.

10. Jennifer Lopez

Part of the original “Big Three” of late-90s bubblegum pop, J-Lo has proven herself to have lots of staying power, continuing to chart with both Spanish and English-language hits throughout the past decade.  The massive success she had with her most recent hit, “On The Floor,” makes me believe she still has a couple of years left in her.  But she is now on the “wrong” side of 40, which means she would be far from my number one spot.

9. Nicki Minaj

After toiling for years appearing on a seemingly endless number of obscure hip-hop remixes, Nicki Minaj is finally reaching her moment in the sun.  At this point, every music fan in America knows who she is, and many think she is the best female rapper in the game, if not the best overall.  She also finally has a Top 10 hit under her belt with “Super Bass” and a successful album in Pink Friday.  However, despite a lot of potential, it remains to be seen just how bankable Minaj really is, so I would still consider her a bit more of a “prospect” than a certifiable superstar.  This is a risky pick but one with a lot of upside.

8. Britney Spears

A lot of things have been said about Britney Spears (some of them very frightening) but one thing that cannot be denied is her impact on pop culture and her continued ability to make hit records.  She may be a bit over the hill in terms of sex appeal, but if you think about it she’s actually a surprisingly safe bet to make some money because no matter how bad her product is, lots of people will still buy it just because it says Britney Spears.  This is of course ignoring all the people who would never buy it for the exact same reason, but those people aren’t the point of this premise anyway.

7. Ke$ha

Can Ke$ha really sell millions of albums?  Probably not.  Can Ke$ha really sell out stadiums?  After seeing her on “Saturday NightLive,” almost definitely not.  But can Ke$ha sell untold boatloads of singles?  Absolutely.  She has already (her first six singles have reached the top 10) and thus it holds that she can continue to do so.  And in today’s singles-driven music industry, that’s often all you need to be a successful artist.  So, I have no doubt that Ke$ha would be a very valuable artist to have on your label, although she’s not as well-rounded as some of the ladies higher up on the list.

6. Adele

After the absolutely stunning runaway success of Adele’s sophomore album 21, and its lead single “Rolling in the Deep,” you would think she would be even higher up on this list.  And I admit I thought about it, given how well she’s done.  But I just can’t justify putting her any higher because she hasn’t proven that she can sell concert tickets, or that she can have another single anywhere near as successful as “Rolling in the Deep,” at least in the U.S.  And without those things, she lacks the bankability that the truly top stars have.  So she’s a bit like Nicki Minaj in that she could someday be at the top of this list, but for right now I have to see her as a bit more of an up-and-comer based on lack of evidence.  Which hurts, because she’s certainly the most talented vocalist on the list, but that’s just the way it goes sometimes.

5. Beyoncé

Since leaving Destiny’s Child almost a decade ago, Beyonce has produced a steady stream of hits and become an African-American icon.  She has sold 75 million records as a solo artist and earned hundreds of millions on tours.  She is absolutely rock-solid.  However it’s worth mentioning that her fourth solo album, appropriately titled 4, has not performed nearly as well as her first three to this point.  Because of this, she comes in at number five, although at age 29 she should have another good decade ahead of her.  But it would be hard for her to top her first decade as a solo performer, so I can really only see her downslide from here.

4. Lady Gaga

Right off the bat it has to be pointed out that Gaga’s latest album, Born This Way, is a warning sign.  Sure it sold phenomenally well in its first week, and its title track spent six weeks at #1.  But the album has not proven to have the staying power that Gaga’s first album, The Fame, did.  But while this drop-off can’t be ignored, neither can the jaw-dropping and historic figures of her first tour.  And with the fanaticism shown by her legions of fans, and her icon status within the LGBT community, Lady Gaga is an industry presence you absolutely want on your side.

3. Katy Perry

Katy Perry has spent over 14 consecutive months in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.  Her sophomore album, Teenage Dream, has exceeded all expectations and produced four #1 singles and a fifth currently peaking at #3.  There is no doubt that if it’s hugely successful singles that you want, you go out and get Katy Perry for your record label.  There’s nobody better than her right now.  Both of her albums have gone 5x platinum as well, so she clearly has some depth.  But again, I have to consider the future here, and I feel like Katy Perry is peaking right now, and it’s all downhill from here.  Certainly her upcoming tour will be a profit bonanza, but after that, does she have another standout album left in her, or will her act get stale?  Ultimately her future may not be as bright as the top two ladies on the list.

2. Taylor Swift

Here are the basics: Taylor Swift is the top-selling digital artist in music history, has sold over 20 million albums worldwide, has had 9 Top 10 hits, and is a role model to millions of teenage girls around the world.  Yet she’s never had a number one hit, and she’s only 21 years old!  What amazes me the most about T-Swift is how well she’s handled going from a teenager to a young woman, both in her personal life and musically.  She seems to be the real deal- no scandal, no changes in genre, just top-notch songwriting and authentic musical talent.  And she basically prints money.  I have zero doubt that she will continue to be a superstar for at least the next decade.  The only thing holding her back from the number one spot is the relative lack of diversity of her fanbase.  First, many guys can’t stand her (although there are many that love her as well).  Also, let’s face it, blacks and Hispanics don’t like country or occasionally-corny pop songs.  Maybe that doesn’t matter, but just for argument’s sake, I say you need to take someone who can truly appeal to just about everyone.

1. Rihanna

Rihanna is the youngest artist to ever reach ten Number 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.  She has already released five albums that have combined to sell over 20 million albums worldwide, and she’s only 23.  These numbers are staggering, but by themselves do they warrant a number one ranking?  I don’t think so.  Luckily, there are some other reasons why Rihanna deserves to be chosen.  Yes, she tours well and can guarantee you lots of money that way, but more importantly she has proven already to be remarkably versatile musically.  Rihanna doesn’t write her own material, and that makes her extremely malleable.  Giver her reggae-dancehall pop and she’ll make it great, give her midtempo R&B and she’ll sell that, and as we’ve seen recently, give her an island-flavored house beat and she’ll make it legendary.  No matter what type of music is popular in the next decade, you can bet that Rihanna’s take on it will hit #1.  Because of that versatility, she has to be my top female choice.

Epic New Post Coming Soon!

OK in the next day or two I'll have a very detailed post up.  Here is the premise:

You are a record exec and you have to sign two artists this year- one male solo artist and one female solo artist.  Any and all acts are potential “free agents” who could be signed.  Who do you pick and why?  Rank your top ten choices for each gender from 10-1.

In other words, who are the most appealing acts out there, who are the most bankable, surefire profit-makers?  I've got my ten for both genders and now I just have to rank them.  Check back soon for the results!

A Bunch of Hot Dance Tracks You NEED To Hear

So typically (or as typically as possible for a blog with about five posts) I've focused on purely Top 40 songs.  But enough great dance/house/whatever-they-insist-on-calling-it-these-days tracks have come out recently that they deserve their own post.

What I would love is for someone to find me a common thread in all of these songs so I can weed out more of the crap from the world of dance music and focus on the standouts like these.  Pandora and all those other bullshit sites suck at that.

If you don't click on each of these links you're missing out (make sure to click "open in new tab" or else it'll take you away from my wonderful blog!):
