You are a record exec and you have to sign two artists this year- one male solo artist and one female solo artist. Any and all acts are potential “free agents” who could be signed. Who do you pick and why? Rank your top ten choices for each gender from 10-1.
In other words, who are the most appealing acts out there, who are the most bankable, surefire profit-makers? I've got my ten for both genders and now I just have to rank them. Check back soon for the results!
GIRLS
ReplyDelete10. M.I.A. (no doubt she has the chops to make a crossover hit, but will she? we'll find out soon)
9. Britney Spears (still marketable, but fading fast)
8. Christina Aguilera (washed up, but maybe the Voice will propel her back into relevance)
7.Nicki Minaj (female rapstress taking names; you know you're a 'motherfuckin' monster' when you can kill someone by sitting on them)
6. Florence Welch (the creative center of Florence & The Machine; not as mainstream as the others, but her next few records will sell a fuckton, I promise)
5. Adele (the breakout star of the year, only a bit older than me, and millions of fans waiting for her next move)
4. Beyonce (29 years old I remind you, been in the industry for over a decade and still getting better)
3. Taylor Swift (will only richen with age; universal appeal)
2. Lady Gaga (love her or hate her, she'll be around for a while)
1. Rihanna (so sexy, so likeable, and so much room to grow)
I know I'm stealing your thunder with the top 3 Jack, but sorry I got here first.
GUYS
ReplyDelete10. Andre 3000 (might have kinda fallen of the map, but a guy this talented can't stay quiet for too long)
9. Tyler, The Creator (not much of a track record so far, but Odd Future has been one of the most hyped groups ever and he's the leader of the pack, young brutish and room to grow)
8. Bon Iver (this year, with the help of Pitchfork, became the indie darling of the US. he truly does have the voice of an angel, and his music is quite universal)
7. Deadmau5 (will continue his run as one of the most appealing DJs globally; may not be the biggest star in the US yet, but its hard to deny him props)
6. Jay-Z (his time has passed no doubt, he's been arguing his own legitimacy for years with nothing much to show for, but he's the biggest entrepreneur in hip-hop and any of Jay's releases will sell millions)
5. Eminem (might have also seen better days, but he's so easy to market and he has such a reputation that any release is golden on the commercial side)
4. Jack Johnson (king of the bros, as long as there will be summer, there will be Jack Johnson)
3. Lil' Wayne (fresh outta prison and a 'delayed' Carter IV coming soon, expect upwards of 5 million sold/downloaded)
2. Justin Timberlake (may be stepping away from music for a while to pursue movies, but his versatility is undeniable; he'll be back after he conquers the Oscars and the Internet)
1. Kanye West (rapper trying the hardest to be the best, and in reality he is the best)
Pretty sure we have the same number 1, but that's probably it.
